Astro 010  Gearing

Irvin Cooper

If the gear ratio you want and need is a 3.3:1, then its hard to beat that Astro 010/020 super box.  It is really high quality and you will never be sorry you bought it.

{Regarding Planetary Gear Boxes, I personally feel the 4.4:1 Astro Planetary and other planetary gear boxes are too heavy to drag around by the little 010.)

But if you need a different ratio, and would like to save some weight and money besides, my favorite is the MPI Maxx Gear box which is now available as a 480 version which has 1/8" bore pinions which fit the Astro Brushless motors.

The gearbox comes with 3 different pinions that allow a 2.0:1, a 2.5:1, & a 3.0:1 ratio.  Dymond Motor Sports sells these for about $16.00, other places sell them but I gotten all mine via Dymond

This gearbox adds about 5/8oz over the direct drive prop and adapter.

Very Very Important: !!!!!! You need remove each of the screws that hold the face plates to the spacers out one at a time and put a drop of slow set CA or Locktite in each hole and then re tighten the screw.  Failure to do this will result in the screws coming loose during use and the gears will no longer be lined up correctly and wear out very fast !!!!

You will need to reverse the Astro 010 to run this configuration.   That is very easy, just switch any two of the three wires going from the esc to the motor.  I used a 2 pin deans connector so I can just unplug and plug to change directions quickly depending on the application.

For Lubrication I like to put a drop of STP on the gears before each flying session.
